About a new blog hosting space and CAPTCHA validation

Finally I've moved my blog to a new hosting space at DiscountASP.NET. In the past the blog was running on a privately held server of which I happened to be the system administrator. So I started looking for suitable hosting where I could hold the same domain names with enough space and monthly traffic. Here's what I got for 20$ per month and three free trial months:

  • 1 GB of web disk space; 263 MB in use currently for images, downloads and more. On IIS 6 with support for ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0.
  • 300 MB SQL Server 2005 space; 90 MB in use for this blog.
  • 40 GB monthly traffic; I'm generating about 600 MB traffic per day according to the current report.
  • 500 MB space for e-mail over a maximum of 500 mailboxes; not in use since my mail is hosted on Exchange elsewhere.

Migration went fine; it only took a few hours to move all of the files to the target machine over FTP (luckily there's an alternative address to upload files when the DNS hasn't been updated yet). Community Server is really xcopy-and-play; damn great! Database migration was as simple as uploading the .mdf file (coming from SQL Server 2000 by the way) and attaching it using the Hosting Control Panel. A few seconds later, the database was online. Not to forget, there's a really simple way to backup the database to my web space and download it to have an offline backup available.

Finally I added CAPTCHA validation to the comment forms on my blog. Lately I got really tired about the spam messages on my blog (filtered by the Community Server spam rules luckily), over 1000 (!!!) a day (the modern DoS attack). Up till now, I just opened the SQL Server Management Studio Express tool and deleted entries from cs_Posts like this:

delete from cs_posts where body like '%piskasosiska%'

from cs_posts where body like '%piskasosiska%'

With this CAPTCHA thing I hope to reduce spam; fingers crossed. If you're interested in trying it yourself, pay Timothy Humphrey's website a visit. Works great with CommunityServer 2.1.
